Funeral eulogy, of our families midwife 2001

Funeral eulogy, of our families midwife 2001

Joan Edelson,
To our family the Benders, Joan was a Jewish grandmother, a herbalist , a nurse, midwife, a confidant and a friend, she was able to step in and out of her many rolls with the fluency of a dancer, for her soul sought to forever choreograph this dance called life in all its color and expressions.

Throughout the years, and decades of her life she took and the glib labels that our culture, attempt to use to separate and disassociate our self’s from ourselves’.
In the late 40’s she was called a bohemian,
In the 50” a beat nick,
Through 60, a flowerchild,
The 70’s a hippie,
The 80” a liberal,
The 90’s a new age grandma.

But she crossed the threshold of our century to show us that she was a unique individual, who’s life could not be contained in any tile or label, for Joan Edison was herself, she had found her passion and uniqueness that made her, one of a kind, and she let that passion fire her soul with all that she did. She knew what life was, for she was alive in her self, and to that end she was able to give herself to so many, in bringing new life’s into this world.

She gave a hundred times more than anyone could give back, for her inner joy was a well spring of giving, which found its limitless supply in the unconditional love that poured out of her being, we are all in debt to her love and giving spirit.

The tears of sorrow we shed today for this great soul are drown out by the great multitude of the cries, and first tears of life that, have issued forth from the hundreds upon hundreds of souls who spent there first moment in this world in the gentle hands of Joan Edison. Each one of those souls experienced the first moments in the warm kindness of an awakened soul and will be forever marked with that blessing.

So in life Joan Edison was so many things to each and all of us here, but in death she has become a teacher for us all, to call us to live in our own beauty, to find in ourselves that brilliant, gorgeous, talented unique self that we are, and to reach down with our hands to all who are laboring in the pain and toil of life, and with our servants heart grab a hold of the souls that seeks to birth them self’s into the first breath of life. So let us repay our debt by loving and giving as she did. Thus she will forever remain with us.

Rest now Joan, we get it!
